TREES
NEED RESPECT TOO

Some
five years ago, Nonoy and Cory Alindogan invited my wife and me for lunch at
their beautiful house in Alabang, Muntinlupa.
Over lunch, Ninong Nonoy (as he was our wedding Godfather) informed us
that the lot they built their house on used to be part of the mango tree
plantation of the Madrigals. Curiously,
though, most of their neighbors felled the mango trees to make way for their
houses. This is not the case for Ninong
Nonoy and Ninang Cory… they actually built their house around the existing
mango trees (some 5 or 6 of them) in their lot.
Their marching order to their architect was: “Move the house if you have
to… but the trees will have to stay where they are!”
Mango
trees, like all fruit-bearing tress, provide food, oxygen and
carbon-sequestration which are very important in supporting life on this
planet. It is quite appalling when
people clear-cut trees simply because they want to see their houses built they
way they were drawn by their architects.
There are ways to built infrastructure without necessarily cutting down
trees. (Please see the images in this
blog.)
There
is little that trees ask of us… they also want to live and co-exist with
us. As much as we work hard for respect,
trees have worked hard serving humanity for so long… trees need respect too.
Just
my little thoughts…
