RESEARCH METHOD AND RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In the field of environmental science, research plays a
critical role in updating and gathering additional knowledge and data as
changes in our natural environment has been very constant and fast-paced in the
past four or five decades. Research
method or research methodology, because of the importance of coping with the
ever changing environmental landscape, becomes important. However, the terms “method” and “methodology”
are two words interchangeably and commonly used in the same light. But are these terms the same?
“What is the difference between research method and research
methodology? Research is characterized
as the methodical investigation into a subject or problem. It seeks answers that involve understanding
and explanation, wherein the credibility of its outcomes depends heavily on the
methods and the process of the research.
Research is not a mechanical application of methods and techniques to
collect and analyze data on the research problem…
Research method is therefore distinguishable from research
methodology. The former refers to the
tools and techniques utilized in the research process… Methodology, on the other hand, is theorizing
about research practice. It involves a
critique of the issues and assumptions of particular approaches to
research”. (Banzon-Cabanilla, 2002)
Here are some dictionary meaning and definition of the terms
method and methodology… Method is a
particular form of procedure for accomplishing or approaching something
especially a systematic or established one and the orderliness of thought or
behaviour, or, systematic planning and action.
On the other hand, methodology is a system of methods used in a
particular area of study or activity.
Between the two explanations (Daylinda Banzon-Cabanilla and
Webster’s Dictionary), Banzon-Cabanilla made distinctions between the two words
while Webster described and defined both terms as basically the same. So here is my take… Methodology is used in labelling parts of the
study; while on the other hand, methods contains a description of the tools and
techniques used. Methodology also
philosophizes the methods used.
Unfortunately, most of us will use these terms anyway we please… but,
there has to be some degree of realization what these terms are and where they should
really apply. Hopefully, this little
article will help clear the meaning, intent and application of the terms “research
method” and “research methodology”.
Just my little thoughts…
