Philippine Environmental Advocacy: Lessons Learned

PHILIPPINE ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCACY: Lessons Learned
by Antonio C. Antonio

Environment unfriendly public policies, unrestricted land conversion, uncontrolled utilization of natural resources, lack of political will, apathy and lack of concern from ordinary citizens; uncontrolled population growth; food security; peace and order; graft and corruption in government; and, the inequitable distribution of opportunities for wealth and quality life from natural resources; etc. has resulted to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, air and water pollution and environmental degradation in general.

Environmental degradation is largely exacerbated by (a) the lack of knowledge, information and awareness of environmental matters and issues, (b) the lack of organized movement to adopt environmentalism as a way of life, and (c) the institutionalizing environmental reforms by way of pro-environment public policies.

In our democratic system of government, we are governed by laws, rules and regulations.  Our ethical standards are naturally dictated by the quality of public policies we have.  Therefore, institutionalizing environmentalism could only come by way of legislative reform.

Just my little thoughts…
